Why does Hydro Ottawa pay the City of Ottawa a dividend?

The City of Ottawa, as our sole shareholder, established a dividend policy which directs Hydro Ottawa to pay annual dividends of 60 percent of its net income or $14 million, whichever is greater. Hydro Ottawa paid its first dividend in 2006. Since then, Hydro Ottawa has delivered $177.4 million to the City of Ottawa, which helps fund municipal programs and services.
